Tybee Island Georgia is the closest beach to Savannah. The island sits 18 miles to the south of the city. Tybee Island offers a laid back envirornment that reminds you of how the beaches of the Southeast coast used to be. The island has not been over developed and still has the charm of a small southern beach town.
Tybee boasts 3 miles of sand dune lined beaches. There are quite a few small modern hotels and motels that line Strand Avenue. One of the largest and best of the island is the Ocean Plaza Resort. The Ocean Plaza is home to the Dolphin Reef Restaurant and Lounge. On a visit to Tybee Island, a meal at the Dolphin Reef is a must. The restaurant is a two story high glass walled experience. This is where you can dine on American style cuisine while enjoying one of the best ocean views on the whole island.
A visit to the Tybee Island Pier And Pavilion offers a great view of the islands coastline and a nice place to go fishing. There is even a fish cleaning station at the end of the pier where many locals gather to catch shark, flounder, or whiting. Under the pavilion, you can enjoy an ice cream cone while local bands play.
Tybee has a collection of small family owned shops and restaurants to enjoy. And a vast majority of the gift shops are not the large chain stores that you see in many other beach towns. Stop in, shop, and support the 4000 or so locals who call Tybee Island home.
